When Guinea Worm is eradicated, it will be the first disease
to be removed from the planet without the use of a vaccine.
1994: LifeStraw began its work with the Carter Center, creating a simple mesh filter to remove Guinea Worm disease from water.
In 1999: this evolved into LifeStraw’s first pipe filter.
In 2017, LifeStraw donated 149,000 Guinea Worm filters which were distributed in the 2 countries with remaining cases: Chad and Ethiopia. Filters were also distributed in Mali and South Sudan, for sustaining eradication efforts. When Guinea Worm is eradicated, it will be the first disease to be removed from the planet without the use of a vaccine.
Overall, LifeStraw has provided over 37 million LifeStraw Guinea Worm filters to the Carter Center and its partners for the eradication of the disease.
